The cover for the Australian version of The Dry was unveiled today as part of the Victorian Premier’s Literary Awards event in Melbourne.

The cover was revealed by Pan Macmillan Australia, with the dusky night sky and stark foreground grass image capturing the mystery and tension of the novel.

The cover will hit the stands in bookshops around Australia on May 31.

"It looks absolutely beautiful, and has had a great response from everyone who has seen it," Jane said.

"I couldn’t have asked for a better public face for the novel."

The cover was revealed to the public for the first time at the Victorian Premier's Literary Awards event in the grounds of Parliament House last night.

The event honoured literary achievements by Australian writers, and named the winners of five categories for the 2015 awards.

The Dry was announced as the winner of the 2015 Unpublished Manuscript Award category in May last year, which for the first time was eligible to compete for the overall Victorian Prize for Literature.

The Prize for Literature was eventually won by playwright Mary Anne Butler for her drama work Broken, scooping her $100,000 in prize money.

Other category winners were:

Fiction: The World Without Us by Mireille Juchau.

Non-fiction: Something For The Pain by Gerald Murnane.

Poetry: Crankhandle by Alan Loney.

Writing for Young Adults: Welcome to Orphancorp by Marlee Jane Ward.
