Indie shortlisted

Jane Harper's follow-up to The Dry, Force of Nature, was shortlisted by judges for the 2018 Indie Book Awards.

Force of Nature was one of four titles shortlisted in the Fiction category, along with On the Java Ridge by Jock Serong, City of Crows by Chris Womersley, and category winner The Choke by Sofie Laguna.

The awards, bestowed by Australian independent booksellers and coordinated by Leading Edge Books, have a strong reputation for highlighting the best Australian titles.

Jane's The Dry was named Indie Book of the Year, as well as Debut Fiction title of the year, last year.

The list of previous award winners reads like a who's who of Australian writing. Since its inception in 2008, Breath by Tim Winton, The Happiest Refugee by Anh Do, Jasper Jones by Craig Silvey, All That I Am by Anna Funder, The Light Between Oceans by M.L. Stedman, The Narrow Road to the Deep North by Richard Flanagan, The Bush by Don Watson and The Natural Way of Things by Charlotte Wood have also been chosen as Indie Book of the Year winners.

Jane said she was honoured Force of Nature had been shortlisted for an Indie Award.

"Independent booksellers and their passion for Australian writing are the reason so many readers have discovered my books, and I am truly grateful to every one of them," Jane said.

"I have been lucky enough to have spent time with some of our country's wonderful independent booksellers over the past year and have been moved by their tireless dedication and enthusiasm for Australian books and authors.

"Their knowledge is a gift and their stores are a joy to visit. Collectively they breathe a vitality into the industry that is hard to find elsewhere in the world."

The winners were announced on March 26 at the Leading Edge Books conference awards dinner in Hobart.
